This paper aims at developing adequate methods of presentation and listing of language elements, focussing on the example sentences for communicative functions, basic vocabulary and grammar. The objective of a national curriculum is the standardization of learning contents and levels. Therefore, in the presentation and listing of language elements the curriculum should distinguish between the second foreign language subject 'xxx Ⅰ' and the second foreign language subject 'xxx Ⅱ', outlining the contents as clearly and precisely as possible. That means the example sentences for the communicative functions should always be related through a communicative intention to a concrete communicative situation or theme respectively. The basic words should be listed only according to their form and without further reference to their meaning or function. Compounds and derivations formed on basis of the words in the vocabulary list should not be listed at all, even though they are considered as basic words. The same applies to number words and proper nouns. However, when counting the number of words actually used in the textbooks, all words should be counted except number words and proper nouns. When listing grammatical elements, not only the elements that have to be excluded should be listed, but also the ones that have to be used. The curriculum is the result of the interaction between didactical theory and teaching reality and should therefore be adapted to the needs of the times.
