This study identifies group disparities found in girls' high school students' use of language learning strategies and the students' beliefs about language learning. It investigates the relationships and correlation between groups and grades. The subjects were 509 students attending two girls' high schools, one located in Seoul, the other in Chungju. Firstly, the study found that statistically, a group disparity only exists in the use of language learning strategy and beliefs regarding language learning between the two groups. This finding indicates that the students in Seoul used strategies more frequently than those in Chungju, thus allowing for the assumption that students' learning ability in Seoul is higher than that of their counterparts in Chungju. Secondly, the correlations between the six strategy variables and the five belief variables show that foreign language learning strategies are highly related to foreign language learning beliefs. And finally, this study reveals that only the group factor had a statistically significant influence on the strategy variables, and that each belief variable is generally related to more than two strategy variables. The results suggest that a) teaching language learning strategy can be one of the methods to help improve students' learning ability, and b) that the regional disparities in relation to students' learning ability be recognized and c) steps to improve the educational environment in areas outside of Seoul should be taken.
