영문 초록

The goal of this paper is to study the reason why there are different tendencies between Pyeonan dialect and the other dialects in Korean, and between Uiju dialect and the other dialects in Pyeongan province.Both ts-palatalization and t-palatalization are very popular in Korean. In contrast, neither ts-palatalization nor t-palatalization occurred in Pyeongan dialect. In Uiju dialect, the sub-dialect of Pyeongan dialect, however, ts-palatalization occurred, but t-palatalization did not. ts-palatalization in Pyeongan dialect : In Korean language, ts-palatalization means that the articulated point of ㅈ(ts) moves to palatal from alveolar. The ts-palatalization was originated from the allophone of ㅈ (ts) in tsyV structure and from the reanalysis of * tfyV structure caused by allophonic rule in tsyV structure. In comparison to the other dialects in Korean, Pyeongan dialect did not undergo change in the point of articulation because of the phonetical feature and y-deletion. In Pyeongang dialect, ㅈ(ts) was articulated at the front part of alveolar and y-deletion preceded ts-palatalization in CyV structure. t-palatalization in Pyeongan dialect : In Korean, t-palatalization means that ㄷ(t) is alternated with ㅈ(ts) in front of vowel i and glide y. To recognize t-palatalization as a phonological change, ts-palatalization must precede it. But there was no ts-palatalization in Pyeongan dialect, so t-palatalization could not be recognized even if ㄷ(t) was phonetically palatalized. For ㄷ(t) to be replaced by ㅈ(tf), the tyV structure is necessary. Because the y-deletion was prominent in CyV structure in this dialect, the environment of t-palatalization vanished therefore ㄷ(t) couldn't be palatalized. ts-palatalization in Uiju dialect : In Uiju dialect there was phonetical ts-palatalization in tsi and tsyV structures in the latter half of the 19th century. Now, ㅈ(ts) is articulated at palatal in Uiju dialect. This ts-palatalization was caused by the contact with the other dialects which underwent ts-palatalization in an earlier period. However, similar to the other sub-dialects in Pyeongan province, there was no t-palatalization because y-deletion preceded t-palatalization in tyV structure.
