Employed women have higher depression scores than employed men. This study explores social factors that might explain this gender difference in mental health We assume that the way men and women perceive work/ family role quality and work/family interface accounts for gender differences in mental health. Using a representative sample of men and women who are performing multiple roles in work and family domains (N = 1076; 35.3 percent women), we examined the relations among multiple dimensions of family relationship quality, work characteristics, work/family spillover and mental health. Results indicate that negative and positive role qualities as well as negative and positive work/family spillover are significant indicators of men's mental health For women, negative role quality and negative work/family interface were the dominant significant predictors while spouse role benefit was non-significant. Especially benefit from work role and positive spillover from work to family lowered men's depression level, yet this social process was not observed in explaining women's case The further details have been discussed.
