This study was to investigate the early auditory performance and vocabulary development of hearing impaired infants for 18 months after hearing aids and cochlear implants were used. participated in this study were fourteen prelingually deafened infants, seven with hearing aids and the rest with cochlear implant. The average aided thresholds of the two groups with hearing aids and cochlear implants were 38 dB HL and 36 dB HL, espectively. evaluation was conducted on a regular basis at I week, 1-3-6-12-18months following first use of devices. test battery used to evaluate auditory performance was EARS-K(Evaluation of Auditory Reponses to Speech-Korean Version) while parents of the subjects were asked to fill out the questionnaire from MCDI-K(MacArthur Communicative Development Inventory-K). Results are summarized as follows; First, the average score of auditory performance started to change immediately from use of hearing aids and continued over time for 18 months. However, there were great individual differences depending on the degree of hearing loss. Second, the average score of auditory performance started to change steadily from use of cochlear implant and continued over time for 18 months. But It was revealed that age of implantation was the most important factor. Third, the average number of expressive vocabulary started to change from 3 months use of hearing aids and continued over time during 18 months. Patterns change of expressive vocabulary was related with degree of hearing loss. Fourth, the average number of expressive vocabulary started to Increase suddenly from 6 months use of cochlear implant for 18 months. And the number of expressive vocabulary at 18 months was greater in the younger than the older. Fifth, the average score of auditory performance of hearing aid group was significantly higher than cochlear implant group. Finally, no significant difference was found in average score of expressive vocabulary between hearing aid and cochlear implant group. In conclusion, the early development of auditory performances and expressive vocabulary continued for 18 months. However, its patterns were varied with degree of hearing loss or age of implantation. And process of development in auditory performances and vocabulary of cochlear implant group was nearly the same as hearing aids group with severe-to-profound hearing loss.
