영문 초록

This paper concerns about the structural characteristics and meaning of folk ballads about bachelor-maiden. Folk ballads about bachelor-maiden are constituted of three types. (1) The bachelor to ask in marriage with the ornaments that a maiden lost. (2) a bachelor who died due to lovesickness. (3)The bachelor and a maiden who fall in love digging up herbs. The structure can be classified with three sub-types: the one is the completion of desire type, the another is the in-completion of demand type and the other is the compound type. (1) type is mostly the compound type, (2) type the in-completion of demand type. (3) type the completion of desire type. Especially (2) type consists of a story that a maiden marry a dead bachelor. The story of the happy-ending is unreal, but the story of the unhappy-ending is realistic. This means that it is not easy for bachelors and maidens in the traditional society to be happy in love and marriage. This shows the paradox of life in the traditional society. Women who create and transmit folk ballads about bachelor-maiden express their consciousness through them as follows. 1) They demand the true love between a bachelor and a maiden in order to marry. 2) They criticize and reject a traditional marriage system made without love. 3) They deny the women's status and is willing to overcome it. Folk ballads about bachelor-maiden is composed of a dramatic narrative story and contains the frankness in women's consciousness. They could, therefore, be got very high valuation in literal estimation.
