영문 초록

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to review acute confusion of aged. Method: Review article. Rusult: Acute confusion is a common problem seen by health professionals who work in a variety of care settings and the incidence in older hospitalized patients is about 24% to 80%. Acute confusion have definitions that is abrupt onset of a cluster of global, transient changes and disturbances in attention, cognition, psychomotor activity level of consciousness, and sleep-wake cycle. The causes of acute confusion are multifactorial; risk factors include high age, cognitive impairment and severity of illness. The consequences of acute confusion include high morbidity and mortality, lengthened hospital stay. Acute confusion develops in a short period and symptoms fluctuate, therefore nurses are in a key position to recognize symptoms. Conclusion: Acute confusion is often overlooked or misdiagnosed due to lack of knowledge and awareness in nurses and health professionals. To improve early recognition of acute confusion, emphasis should be given to terminology, vision and knowledge regarding health in aging and acute confusion as a potential medical emergency, and to instruments for systemic screening of symptoms.
