Immigrant literature provides the process and factors of immigration, the reality of immigrants' lives, and actual solutions to real life problems. In this respect, immigrant literature not only presents the objects of geographical inquiries but also represents a new approach for geographical examinations.
The purpose of this study is to probe into how Korean immigrants to the United States perceived their motherland as well as which factors lay behind their home consciousness by analyzing Korean immigrant literary works written before the 1945 liberation of Korea from Japan. It also attempts to shed light on how Korean immigrants' home consciousness affected their way of adaptation to the United States and their relationships with the homeland. This would be a starting point for comparing the notions of homeland which Korean immigrants to the United States developed before and after liberation of Korea from Japan.
The spatial context of Korean immigrants' notion of home consists of a various geographical range, specific place names, environmental factors based upon individuals' experiences, and idealized places mirrored in metaphorical expressions. On the other hand, the cultural context comprises diverse elements of history, politics, society, tradition, values, and lifestyle.
The degrees of Korean consciousness reveal the immigrants' assimilation to the United States.
Korean-Americans who fully adapted themselves to the new environment considered the United States as a second homeland. The factors having had positive effects on them included their fascination of beautiful nature in their adopted land, the efficiency of socio-economic systems, and their sense of belonging to society. On the contrast, those who had difficulties in adapting to the new environment did not develop a sense of attachment to society while experiencing racial discrimination. These immigrants demonstrated a strong will to return to their native land.
Korean-Americans established Koreatowns in major cities in the United States at the same time as they formed Korean cultural places based upon their customs and traditions. The early Koreatowns played a role of a path along which Korean immigrants migrated eastward in the United States.
Meanwhile, some of the Koreans who returned to their place of birth due to their yearning for homeland, grief over the colonization of Korea, and determination to enlighten society and to relieve the poor disseminated a variety of elements of American culture in Korea. The process of acculturation brought about changes in terms of food, clothing and shelter, economic activities, and social relations in Korea.
