영문 초록

The eup-settlement(邑治) means a local administrative town of the Chosun dynasty. The cultural landscapes of historical towns should be revalued and appreciated since they give us various symbolic meanings and deep authenticity. Seventy-one eup-settlements existed in Gyeongsang province, and many of the eup-settlements located on were riversides and surrounded by lower mountains. Town forests(邑藪) called bibo(裨補) were constructed in order to prevent flood and to feel safe of from danger. Each eup-settlement has administrative buildings such as Gyeg-sa(客舍), Dong-hun(東軒), and four kinds of sacrificial places. The landscape of eup-settlement with administrative a buildings and sacrificial places represents the hierarchical ideology well as the administrative function. Especially, landscapes of eup-settlement with surrounding hills and forests appreciated were as harmonious with nature. With the town territory surrounded with mountains and forests, the riverside and the mountain-foot authentic location and the official buildings and hidden sacrificial places could be considered as ecologically sound and culturally meaningful of for identification community membership. I believe that the researches on the historical landscapes of eup-settlements will contribute in the making of a new city plans.
