This paper examines the educational value of folktales that could boost children's creativity emphasized by the 7th National Education Curriculum.
First, analyzing the tales in textbooks, it was found that most of them give wisdom to the readers, especially by solving problems with original ideas. Such tales require reasoning and imagination, which lead to creativity featured by fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration. Therefore, it is only natural that studying the tales can encourage creativity.
Second, this paper also discusses the way to utilize similar groups of tales in education with cases. There is a good possibility of using tales for creativity education if we utilize the similarities and differences found in the stories. Giving proper questions can encourage students' flexibility and originality. In addition, based on the fact that a number of tales have similar structure but differ only in details, we could instruct children to understand that the details can be replaced by others and to present new ideas to substitute them. Finally, I took a close look at the way to understand the tales with sound criticism and develop comprehensive thinking ability.
Such an approach is expected to contribute to solving the problem that the 7th National Education Curriculum is focused on microscopic aspects of the tales despite its aim of pursuing integrated education.
