This paper took a deep consideration to explain confessional writing on Shin, Kyung-sook's novel. Especially, first-person confessional narrator appears in her novel, . She is both female character and female narrator that harks back to the past through act of her memory. Her adolescence was in connection her position that a industry school's student and a factory girl. These past memories and events happened in isolated room that lived in rooms.
Confessional narrator, I and factory girls is common that they had scar and trauma in novel. Their outward scar is injured in the industrial plant, whereas inward trauma is derived from their situation and social position. But her hurt is deeper than theirs(a factory girls' hurt). And it is because she is never acquiesce them. But her attitude and perception change gradually. It is intimately related to act of her memory and act of writing. Her early attitude was negative for factory girls and industry school's classmates. It was the same as a deep bog to her. But her later attitude change affirmatively because of her continual act. In the result, she acquiesce in them.
This novel's remarkable narrative characteristic is represented the present and the past by her confessional act or writing. In other words, her confessional writing makes double story-line of the present and the past. Her confessional writing and style have charge of function that criticize a life of present and reconstruct a life of past. These crossing narrative form produce effect of objectivate in herself. In the result, it produce effect of reflection on herself. Furthermore her memories is extended from personal memories to common memories in a novel. Her confessional writing cures the hurt of herself and themselves. And it is right the meaning of memory.
In this thesis, the author can understand confessional writing effect of . In summary, a person's inward memories communicated with collective awareness in this novel. Consequently, collective history is created afresh. Therefore act of confessional writing is motivated memory-narrative. In conclusion, the study of confessional writing latent in Shin, Kyung-sook's novel provided opportunities to differently approach.
