남북한 여성 생활문화의 이해 : 집안일과 육아를 중심으로

국문 초록

이 연구는 남북한 여성들의 구술생애사를 분석해서 일상생활에서 드러나는 집안일과 육아 경험의 다름과 같음을 비교한 것이다. 남북한은 해방이후 현재까지 서로 다른 역사적 과정을 밟아왔기에 남북한 여성들의 일상적 삶도 많은 차이가 나타난다. 그런가하면, 해방 이전 동일한 문화적 뿌리가 서로 다른 정치체제 아래서도 남북한 여성의 삶을 지배하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 남북한 여성들의 집안일과 육아는 그것을 구성하는 요소들은 같지만, 그 내용과 비중은 다르다. 남한 여성들에게 육아는 제일 큰 비중을 차지하는데 비해서, 북한 여성들에게 있어서 육아는 국가와의 분담으로 인해서 그 무게가 줄어든다. 그러나 남북한 여성이 공통적으로 경험하는 것은 가부장제와 자족주의가 산업사회에서도 지속된다는 점이다. 그 결과 여성의 일상생활은 성별분업에 기초하고 있으면서도 전업 취업 주부를 막론하고 공적영역으로 확장된 집안일과 어머니의 역할을 강조하는 문화 속에서 생활한다.

영문 초록

This study aims at the comparative research of the South and North Korean women's housework and child rearing practices in order to reveal its distinctive characteristics of each society. For this, oral histories of 16 women from the South and North were collected and analyzed. The South and North have respectively developed different political and economic systems after liberation from colonialism in 1945. Each political system has consequently structured the culture of everyday life of women. However, the two societies also shared the same cultural traditions before liberation. It means that the traditional culture has run down through the South and North Korean women's everyday life. Women of the South and the North have had common norms and behaviors under the system of patriarchical family and the ideology of familism. As a result, the gendered division of labor have deeply rooted in everyday life of women in both societies. Regardless women with or without jobs, they are expected to work in and out of house in the name of 'housework' so called 'jib an il' and be super-mothers. In the meantime, there is a big difference between the two societies regarding child rearing practices. While women in the South should put their whole efforts into child raising and education following the social norms and discourses, women in the North receive the government's active involvement in child rearing. This study analyzes the differences and similarities of housework and child rearing practices imposed on women who live in different political systems at present and share the same cultural traditions in the past.
