Effects of Feedback Breathing Exercise on Pulmonary Function and Cerebral Cortex Activity in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Objective: This study analyzed the effects of complex breathing exercises on pulmonary function and cerebral cortex activity in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to develop effective interventions and management strategies in clinical settings. Design: Pretest-posttest group Methods: In total, 31 patients with COPD were clinically sampled; 16 and 15 patients who underwent feedback and complex breathing exercises were randomly assigned to experimental groups I and II, respectively. The intervention program was implemented for six weeks, three days weekly, once a day, three sets per session, 10 times per session. Pulmonary function and cerebral cortex activity were measured before the intervention, and the changes were compared by measuring the post-test after six weeks. Results: In the intragroup change comparison of experimental group I, significant differences were found in FEV1 (p<0.05) and alpha waves in the Fp1, Fp2, F3, and F4 regions (p<0.01). In the intergroup comparison of the experimental groups, significant differences were found in the alpha waves in the Fp1, Fp2, and F4 regions (p<0.05). Conclusions: Feedback breathing exercises enhance psychological stability through cerebral cortex activation and can be used in clinical settings. Further studies should explore the respiratory mechanisms and long-term effects of various management approaches for patients with COPD.
