영문 초록

This research describes an effective intervention using speech oral motor treatments(SOMTs) for speech errors of children who had orthodontic treatment due to functional posterior crossbite. The subjects were two children aged 6;0 and 6;2 who showed distortion errors of lateralizing for vowel /i/ and lingual consonants in vowel /i/ environments. These children inconsistently exhibited mandible laterality when closing their jaws and consistently presented lateralized position of tongue body when producing speech sound /i/. The lateralized tongue when articulated /i/ seems to underlie distortion errors. Thus, articulation therapy incorporating sensory-motor approach and SOMTs for improvement of oral movement involved in target sound production was provided. The articulation accuracy was measured and the phonemes of lateralization distortion errors were analyzed before and after intervention. It was found that all participants showed the higher articulation accuracy after intervention than before one and no lateralization errors for lingual consonants at the spontaneous speech levels after intervention. It was concluded that the SOMTs targeting appropriate oral movement might be beneficial for young children who present distorted lateralization errors caused by functional posterior crossbite.
