국문 초록

본 연구는 농업 이주노동자들이 경험하는 노동조건과 지역사회 내 상호작용의 구조적 특징을 ‘리미널리티(liminality)’ 개념을 통해 설명하였다. 통과의례에서 다음 단계로 전이하기 위한 리미널리티 상황에서는 기존의 사회질서와 신분이 부정당하는 상태에 놓인다. 본 연구는 노동자의 권리를 보장받지 못하는‘노동 리미널리티’와 지역사회의 구성원으로 인정받지 못하는 ‘주민 리미널리티’의 구조적 특징을 성주군농업 이주노동자의 경험적 사례를 통해 밝히고자 한다. 이를 위해 성주군 내 6명의 태국 출신 미등록이주노동자와 2명의 농장주를 대상으로 심층 면접 및 현장조사를 실시였다. 연구 결과, 팬데믹 이후에도 농업 이주노동자의 노동권은 보장받지 못하고 열악한 노동 환경과 부당한임금, 일방적인 노동 통제의 노동 리미널리티가 형성되어 있으며, 지역사회 차원에서도 이주노동자를 ‘필요하지만 두려운 존재’로 인식하여 주민 되기의 다음 단계로 나아가지 못하는 주민 리미널리티를 형성하고 있었다. 이와 같은 노동권의 부정과 지역 주민들의 양가적 인식이라는 사회구조 속에서 이주노동자들은 속수무책으로 당하는 무기력한 존재가 아니라, 작업장 이탈이나 온라인 네트워크 등을 활용하여 경제적 이익을 유지하고 작업환경을 개선하기 위한 합리적 선택을 수행하는 능동적 행위의 주체로 나타났다.

영문 초록

This study explains the structural characteristics of working conditions and community interactions experienced by agricultural migrant workers through the concept of “liminality”. In a liminal situation within rites of passage, individuals are placed in a state in which the existing social order and suatus are suspended or denied. This study aims to elucidate the structural characteristics of “labor liminality,” where workers’ rights are denied, and “inhabitant liminality,” where workers are not recognized as members of the community, through the empirical cases of agricultural migrant workers in Seongju-gun. To this end, in-depth interviews and fieldwork were conducted with six undocumented Thai migrant workers and two farm owners in Seongju-gun. The results revealed that even after the pandemic, working conditions have not improved, and labor liminality, characterized by poor working conditions, unfair wages, and unilateral labor control, continues. At the local level, migrant workers are perceived as “necessary but feared,” creating a inhabitant liminality that prevents them from progressing to the next stage of becoming residents. Within this social structure characterized by the denial of labor rights and the ambivalent perceptions of local residents, migrant workers are not helpless victims, but rather active agents who utilize methods such as leaving the workplace and online networks to seek rational choices to maintain economic benefits and improve their working environment.
