Window of the City: Li Courtyards and the Daily Life of Ordinary People in Modern Qingdao

국문 초록

During the German colonial period, Qingdao witnessed the emergence of a unique type of collective housing that blended Chinese and Western architectural elements—Li Courtyards (Li Yuan). It is generally believed that their construction was initiated by the German developer Siemens. Due to natural geographical conditions and the prevailing social environment, a large number of Li Courtyards were subsequently built in the Dawudao area, where Chinese residents were concentrated. By 1935, a survey by the Social Affairs Bureau recorded over 600 such structures, which had by then evolved into various architectural styles. Qingdao at the time attracted people from diverse regions and social strata. Investors such as merchants and politicians purchased these properties but did not live in them; instead, they rented them out directly or indirectly to lower- and middle-class residents. The everyday lives of these residents within the Li Courtyards reflected a vivid and authentic picture of Qingdao's social reality in that era.

영문 초록

德占时期，青岛兴起了一批融合中西建筑特色的集合住宅——里院。一般认为，其兴建始于德国建筑商希姆森，随后，出于自然地理、社会环境等原因，里院在华人聚居的大鲍岛地区被大量建造，至1935 年社会局调查时，已有六百余栋，并发展出更多建筑样式。当时的青岛吸引了来自各地区、各阶层的民众，商人、政客等投资者置办房产但并不居住，直接或间接地出租给社会中下层民众，民众在其中的生活百态展现着当时真实的社会图景。
