임진왜란기 이항복의 전란극복활동과 이순신과의 인연

국문 초록

이 글은 임진왜란기 이항복의 전란극복활동과 이순신과의 인연을 분석하기 위한 것이다. 이를 위해 이항복의 생애·사상과 이순신과의 인연, 이항복의 수군통제사 이순신 복귀 제청, 이충무공 사당 건립 주도 및 통제이공수군대첩비 비문 작성, 그리고 이항복의 난세의 조정자적 활동과 그 함의를 살펴보았다. 임진왜란기에 이원익·유성룡·정탁은 이순신을 적극 지지·옹호한 인물이며, 이항복도 양상과 정도는 다르지만 이순신 지지·옹호, 수군통제사 이순신 복귀 제청, 이순신 비문 작성 등으로 이순신과의 적지 않은 인연이 있었다. 이순신은 해전사적 승전기록에 있어서 타의 추종을 불허함은 물론 문무덕을 겸전한 숭고한 인격의 소유자로서 조국에 대한 지극한 충성심과 탁월한 통솔력·리더십을 발휘한 우리역사상 유례를 찾아보기 쉽지 않은 인물이다. 이순신은 일생동안 구국정신으로 국가에 몸과 마음을 바친 위대한 군인이자 성웅이었다. 이항복은 ①선조 임금 파천 주도 및 명나라 청병에 관한 상소, ②명나라의 파병·진병(進兵)의 설득·관철 등 난세의 조정자적 역량을 발휘하였다. 또한 이순신 수군통제사 복귀를 선조 왕에게 제청하여 임진왜란 등 국난극복에 크게 기여한 인물이었다. 또한 그는 이순신의 능력·인품·진가를 알았기에 순국 후 이순신 사당 건립 주도 및 그의 공적에 관한 명문의 비문 작성 등을 통해 이순신 현양에 가장 먼저 앞장설 수 있었다. 전란 중 대내외적 조정자였던 이항복은 불패의 구국영웅 이순신과 함께 상호 신뢰, 예지·통찰력 등으로 시너지 효과를 발휘하여 임진왜란을 승리로 이끌었을 뿐만 아니라, 순국한 이순신의 공적과 정신이 현양될 수 있도록 그 기반조성에도 크게 기여하였다.

영문 초록

The paper is to analyze Yi Hang-bok's activities to overcome the war and his relationship with Yi Sun-shin during the Imjin War. To this end, we examined the life and thoughts of Yi Hang-bok, his relationship with Yi Sun-sin, Yi Hang-bok's recommendation to return to the naval commander Yi Sun-sin, his leading role in the construction of the Yi Chungmugong(Yi Sun-sin) shrine and his writing the epitaph for the Naval Battle Monument of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, and Yi Hang-bok's activities as an important mediator in troubled times and their implications. During the Imjin War, Yi Won-ik, Yoo Seong-ryong, and Jeong Tak were figures who actively supported and defended Yi Sun-sin, and although the nature and degree of Yi Hang-bok were different, he also had a significant relationship with Yi Sun-sin through supporting and defending him, requesting the reinstatement of Yi Sun-sin as the Naval Commander, and writing the epitaph for Yi Sun-sin etc. Yi Sun-sin was an unprecedented figure in our history who not only had an unrivaled record of naval victories, but also possessed a noble character who possessed both civil and martial arts skills, as well as extreme loyalty to his country and excellent command and leadership. Yi Sun-sin was a great soldier and hero who devoted his body and soul to the nation in the spirit of national salvation throughout his life. Yi Hang-bok was a figure who greatly contributed to overcoming national crises such as the Imjin War by ①leading the relocation of King Seonjo and presenting a petition to King Seonjo requesting troops from the Ming Dynasty, and ②persuading and enforcing the dispatch and advance of troops from the Ming Dynasty. He was also a person who made a great contribution to overcoming national crises such as the Imjin War by suggesting that Yi Sun-sin be reinstated as the Naval Commander. In addition, because he knew of Yi Sun-sin's abilities, character, and true worth, he was able to take the lead in glorifying Yi Sun-sin after his death by taking the lead in constructing a shrine to him and writing an inscription on his tombstone regarding his achievements after his death. As a mediator of internal and external affairs during the war, Yi Hang-bok, together with the undefeated national hero Yi Sun-sin, not only led the Japanese invasions of Korea to victory through mutual trust, foresight, and insight, but also contributed greatly to creating a foundation to honor the achievements and spirit of Yi Sun-sin, who died fighting to save the country.
