The purpose of this study is to explore Korean speakers’ production of English /mL/ and /nL/ sequences, in comparison to the same sequences in Korean. It is known that the /mL/ sequence undergoes nasalization, while the /nL/ sequence experiences either nasalization or lateralization in Korean. In a production experiment in which Korean-speaking participants were asked to produce a set of Korean and English /mL/ or /nL/ embedded words, it was observed that the participants’ pronunciation of the /mL/ sequences was based on the orthography of each language rather than applying the nasalization rule. The /nL/ sequences varied depending on the language: Korean /nL/ sequences were more likely to be pronounced with lateralization while English ones were pronounced in accordance with English orthography. The degree of applying phonological rules and the extent to which they transfer their native Korean rules to English clearly varied across individual speakers.
