국문 초록

『부활』은 제목 그대로 그리스도의 부활을 다룬 희곡으로 기독교도가 아닌 예이츠로서는 이례적인 작품이다. 구조는 그리스도가 인간인가, 신인가 하는 본질에 대한 등장인물들의 토론과 주장, 코러스의 노래, 부활한 그리스도의 등장으로 이루어져 있다. 그리스도가 심장이 뛰는 인간으로, 죽음을 극복한 신으로 등장함으로써 등장인물과 관객에게 큰 충격을 준다. 그러나 죽음과 재생을 반복하는 디오니소스와의 유사성과 만물유전설을 강조하는 코러스의 노래를 시작, 중간, 끝에 배치함으로써 그리스도의 부활로 시작된 기독교 문명도 2천년을 주기로 순환하는 긴 역사의 한 주기에 불과하고 다른 문명과 마찬가지로 흥망성쇠를 겪기 마련이라는 예이츠의 기독교관을 보여준다.

영문 초록

The structure of The Resurrection is simple. The characters debate their respective beliefs in Christ’s total humanity and his total divinity. Christ’s appearance affirms the resolution: Christ is both man and god. Yeats attempts to reinterpret the meaning of Christ’s death and resurrection, restoring to it the Dionysian characteristics that Christianity had always excluded. The main theme is Yeats’s ideas about the Dionysian element in Christianity, and about Christianity’s role as the apocalyptic termination of the Greek and Roman culture and power. The parallel imagery of Dionysian death and resurrection, which is found in the songs of the musicians and echoed by the minor action of unseen worshippers in the streets, emphasizes the relationship of Christ’s resurrection to a cyclical view of history and human personality explicitly associated with a Heraclitian doctrine of flux.
