에덴 동산 이미지와 회복으로서의 구원

국문 초록

구약성경의 첫 권인 창세기 2-3장과 신약성경의 마지막 권인 요한 묵시록 21-22장에는 생명의 물과 생명 나무라는 공통된 요소가 등장한다. 이는 성경 전체가 인간의 죄로 인해 상실하였던 낙원을 회복하는 방향으로 구원이 진행되고 있음을 알려주는 구원의 지도 역할을 하고 있음을 알려준다. 이에 필자는 에덴 동산 이미지가 회복으로서의 구원의 전망을 드러내기 위해 성경 전체에 걸쳐서 어떻게 활용되고 있는지 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위하여 에덴 동산이 직접적으로 언급되거나 에덴 동산의 이미지와 직접적 관련성이 있다고 여겨지는 성경 본문들을 선정하고, 이 본문들 안에서 에덴 동산 이미지가 구원과 관련하여 어떤 의미를 함의하고 있는지 검토할 것이다. 먼저, 에덴 설화(창세 2,4ㄴ-3,15) 안에서 에덴 동산 이미지가 상징하는 바가 무엇인지를 밝힌다. 에덴 동산은 하느님이 거처하시는 성소이자 인간이 머물 수 있는 이상적인 환경을 상징한다. 에덴 동산 이미지가 가진 이 두 가지 상징성은 에덴 동산이 언급되거나 에덴 동산과 직접적 관련성이 있는 본문들 안에서 점차로 확장되어 나간다. 에덴 동산 이미지는 광야의 성막과 솔로몬 성전, 에제키엘의 회복된 성전에서 활용된다. 특히 하느님의 현존 장소로서의 특징이 강조되며, 성소에서 흘러나오는 물은 하느님이야말로 생명의 원천이심을 드러낸다. 풍요와 축복을 드러내는 에덴 동산 이미지는 토라 준수에 따라오는 축복과 메시아적 희망, 예루살렘과 시온의 회복, 새로운 창조가 가져올 축복과 번영을 드러내기 위해 사용된다. 에덴 동산은 또한 세상을 떠난 의인들의 거처를 가리키기도 한다. 이런 본문들에서 에덴 동산의 이미지는 단순히 옛것의 회복이기보다는 하느님의 현존과 더불어 이루어질 하느님의 선이 충만히 실현되는 완성을 가리키기 위해 활용된다. 에덴 동산 이미지와 연관된 본문들은 구원의 완성된 형태에 대한 구체적인 그림을 제시하지는 않을뿐더러 많은 것들이 모호한 채로 남아 있다. 다만, 회복된 구원의 가장 뚜렷한 특징은 하느님의 현존으로부터 멀어질 수 있는 가능성이 없는 상태라는 점이다. 그러나 낙원의 회복은 전적으로 하느님께서 이루실 일이며, 회복된 상태에 참여하기 위해서는 하느님의 은총을 통한 정화가 요구된다.

영문 초록

The imagery of Eden, particularly the water of life and the tree of life, prominently appears in both the first book of the Old Testament, Genesis 2-3, and the last book of the New Testament, Revelation 21-22. This parallel underscores the Bible’s role as a thematic map that directs humanity toward salvation, signifying the restoration of the paradise lost due to human sin. Focused on this observation, this study investigates how the imagery of Eden elucidates various perspectives on salvation. To achieve this, texts that reference the Garden of Eden and its related themes, are analyzed, with focus on their significance with regard to salvation. First, I will explore the depiction of Eden in the narrative of the Garden (Gen 2:4a-3:24), revealing it as a sacred place where God dwells and an ideal environment for human existence. This dual symbolism is expanded in la- ter texts that reference Eden, including those describing the Tabernacle, the Solomonic Temple, and the Ideal Temple envisioned by Ezekiel in chapters 40-48 of his book. These passages emphasize characteristics of God’s dwelling place, particularly the water flowing from the sanctuary, symbolizing God as the source of life. The Edenic imagery, representing abundance and blessing, is also linked to the rewards of Torah observance, the Messianic hope, the anticipated restoration of Jerusalem and Zion, and the prosperity associated with new creation. Additionally, this imagery evokes the abode of the righteous after death. What is important is while these texts convey the restoration of Eden, they do not provide a definitive vision of perfected salvation, leaving many aspects ambiguous. A key feature of this restored state is the unbreakable proximity to God’s presence. Ultimately, while God restores salvation, participation in this salvation necessitates purification through divine grace.
