Acquisition of English interdental fricatives by Mongolian speakers

국문 초록

이 연구는 몽골인의 영어 습득과정에서 생기는 영어 치간 마찰음에 대한 자음대체 현상에 대하여 고찰하였다. 영어 치간 마찰음은 많은 언어에서 음소로 존재하지 않는 자음으로 습득 상 가장 어려운 자음으로 알려져 있어 이에 대한 연구가 많이 진행되어 왔다. 그러나 몽골인의 발음에 대한 연구는 희박한 편이다. 이에 이 연구에서는 21인의 몽골인 학생을 대상으로 한 실험을 통하여 발음 자료를 수집하고 최적성 이론에 근거하여 분석하였다. 자료 분석과정에서 나타난 몽골인의 발음 대체 양상은 다음과 같다. 화자의 모국어 배경에 따라 대체현상은 보통 [t]와 [s]-대체 두 가지로 분류되는데 몽골인은 그중 [t]-대체 현상을 보였다. 이전 연구와 달리 본 연구에서는 몽골인은 자신의 모국어의 위계를 전이하여 영어의 출력형을 결정하는데 이때 가장 역할을 하는 것은 유표적인 마찰음은 허용되지 않는다는 범어적인 제약이 라고 보았다. 또한 어말에 더 많은 대체 오류 현상을 보이고 유성음을 무성음으로 대체하는 현상은 위치상의 유표성에 근거하여 어말이 어두보다 유표적이고 유성음이 무성음보다 더 유표적이기 때문이라는 것을 최적성이론의 틀에서 분석하였다. 몽골인의 중간언어에서 모국어 위계의 전이와 모국어나 목표어(영어)의 위계가 아닌 독일어와 같은 위계가 나타나는 점을 들어 모국어 문법의 전이와 범어적인 문법의 상호관계를 설명하였다.

영문 초록

This paper investigates phoneme substitution patterns of English interdental fricatives in the interlanguage of Mongolian speakers. To this end, 21 Mongolian students in Korea were recorded reading aloud a passage, a dialogue and 97 words. The findings are: 1) Mongolian subjects show a so-called [t]-substitution pattern in which interdentals are replaced by stops instead of fricatives. 2) The data revealed the positional markedness effects that word-final positions incur more errors. 3) Voiced dental interdentals show an asymmetric pattern in that they are replaced by voiceless stops word-finally, while being replaced by voiced stops in other positions. These patterns are accounted for within the Optimality Theory. This study offers insights into Mongolian interlanguage grammar yielding a unified account of transfer and markedness effects.
