국문 초록

본 논문은 국가 주도 하의 도시 개발을 다룬 2010년 전후의 중국 다큐멘터리들에 주목하였다. 중국의 다큐멘터리라는 범주에는 관방 이데올로기 선전 다큐멘터리와, 그와는 차별되는 독립 다큐멘터리 작업들이 포함된다. 이 글에서는 중국의 급격한 경제적 팽창에 따른 도시화 과정, 특히 국가 주도의 도시 개발을 주류 다큐멘터리와 독립 다큐멘터리가 각각 어떻게 의미화하고 문제화하는지 서술한다. 분석 대상으로 선정한 주류 다큐멘터리 <와이탄> 시리즈 제5편 ‘스카이라인’ 그리고 <중국을 설계하다> 시리즈 제2편 ‘헤르초크, 드뫼롱 그리고 국립체육관’이 발전주의와 국가 역사관을 결합함으로써 도시 경관에 영구화된 역사주의 이미지와 서사를 입힌다면, 독립 다큐멘터리 <궁전의 땅> 그리고 <쓰촨은 무너지지 않았다>는 그와 대비되는 이미지의 배치를 통해 국가와 기층 인민의 시간차를 보여주며, 발전주의에 입각한 도시 이미지와 역사 서사에 균열을 일으킨다. 두 편의 독립 다큐멘터리는 주류 매체가 다루지 않는, 급격한 도시화 과정 속에서 보통 사람들의 경험을 대안적으로 구성한다는 데 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

This article focuses on the documentaries produced in the early 2010s that deal with Chinese state-sponsored urban development. Chinese documentaries include both mainstream propaganda documentaries(“Special Topic Films”) and Independent documentaries. This study describes how the urbanization process, caused by China’s rapid economic growth, has been problematized in mainstream and independent documentaries. Two mainstream documentaries on channel CCTV-9, Waitan(2011) and Design for China(2011) combine developmentalism with national historical narratives, and represent cityscapes as permanent historical images. On the other hand, two independent documentaries The Land of Many Palaces(2014) and Fallen City(2011), show the temporal difference between the state and ordinary people that has resulted from urban development. Both films challenge the historical narrative based on developmentalism through the arrangement of images. This article emphasizes that the two independent films are alternative in the sense of representing the experiences of ordinary people in a process of rapid urbanization that are not dealt with by the mainstream media.
