영문 초록

This paper investigates the effects of the size of Jaebol on the profitability of its member firms. A big Jaebol, consisting of tens of large firms, plays very important role in Korean economy in terms of production, export, growth, value added, employment, etc. Moreover a group of around 10 big Jaebols dominates major economic activity in Korea. Thus it has been considered that the Jaebol system would be a good strategy to achieve a rapid economic growth. In th is paper, however, the size of Jaebol appeared to have negative effects on the profitability of its member firms in both absolute and relative size. In addition, the size of individual firms within the Jaebol has also negative effects on their profitability. These results support the suspected fact that Jaebol system may yield in-efficiency due to the non-optimal size of the Jaebol itself and individual firms within the Jaebol while it may stimulate quantitative expansion.
