Objectives: This paper reviews evidence pertaining to clinical characteristics and assessment of pathological gambling from integrated studies. Methods: A systematic search was conduct-ed for peer-reviewed or unpublished reports and articles. They were identified from research-databases (Pubmed, PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, Science Direct, RISSs etc.), covering the period before and after 2000, as well as from relevant reference lists. Forty-eight eligible studies were only employed by inclusion criteria. Results: Results from the numerous studies primarily indicated that pathological gambling has neuro-biological, bio-logical, psycho-social and ecological similarities to general addictive diseases. Therefore, researchers have acknowledged that pathological gambling should be regarded as a behavioral ad-diction and provided appropriate treatments and social services, rather than negative stigmatization. Also, in regards of under-standing on pathological gamblers, this paper identified typical cognitive errors, pathological types and explanatory models. Moreover, screening tools of gambling problems, diagnostic criteria (DSM) and processes of comprehensive assessment were reviewed to facilitate better understanding of analyzing system. Conclusions: Pathological gambling can adversely affect not only gamblers themselves but also family and society. Therefore, providing clear investigation and proper intervention is critical to prevent long-term adverse consequences.
