영문 초록

  The aim of this study is to examine King Horn as the political appropriation in the transformation from folktale to romance. Written in the last part of the thirteenth century, King Horn is probably the oldest surviving Middle English romance, while it contains a number of characteristics of folktale. The date 1250s when King Horn was composed as present text coincided with the Crusades swept Western Europe of Middle Age. The Crusades were a series of military conflicts of a religious character waged by much of Christian Europe during 1095-1291, most of which were sanctioned by the Pope in the name of Christendom.
  Many motifs of King Horn―sea voyage, exile and return, revenge and marriage―do belong to tradition of tale, while its motifs―chivalry, knighthood―reflect romance tradition. It can be suggested that King Horn projects the contemporary concerns about the Crusades, since the writer needed to project the consciousness of people about them. In this context, King Horn can be read as political appropriation in the transformation from folktale to romance.
