During Chelsea’s travels in Paris, a squirrel from Manhattan asks Chelsea a favor. The squirrel asks for Chelsea to look for and inquire after his endangered red squirrel cousins in London. Although the red squirrels are endangered, Chelsea initially believes it would be easy to find the red squirrels in her hometown Victoria Park. Yet, Chelsea does not find the red squirrels. Leaving Victoria Park, Chelsea then tries to look for the red squirrels’ whereabouts at an animal protection organization but only ends up learning that she along with her friends at Victoria Park are all endangered animals. As Chelsea sorrowfully walks the streets of London, only then does she begin to realize that the piles of trash as well as the shops overflowing with clothes and shoes are all threatening the animals to extinction. Will the mournful Chelsea be able to meet the red squirrels? Will Chelsea find hope again?

Finding Red Squirrels in London is a picture book that feels as if we are traveling the streets and parks of London during summer as we follow Chelsea’s perspective. It is the only picture book in the environmental picture book series that does not have any writing. While this book also follows the first three books in their concerns for the environment, this fourth book specifically focuses on relaying the message through emotions and empathy. Furthermore, this is a story of animals that are becoming extinct because of humans and their mindless production and consumption. By illustrating the change of atmosphere in London’s streets and parks depending on Chelsea’s realization and changes in emotions, the drawings not only provide entertainment for the readers but also intend to draw out the reader’s empathy and deliver a message on protecting the environment.

저자(글) Vincent S Ko

Vincent studied drawing and printmaking at Pratt Institute in New York. After her studies, she taught art to teachers and students at a local elementary school in Tanzania, Africa. Today she continues her career as an artist in major cities, including Seoul, Paris, and London. Her passion for the environment naturally grew as she traveled and lived around the world. She wishes to share the beauty of the world through her picture books, with stories that remain in your heart long after you close the book.
