8세기 아바스 왕조의 칼리프 하룬 알라시드 시대에 바그다드는 중요한 국제 도시였으며 페르시아, 인도, 중국, 아프리카, 유럽의 상인과 학자들로 가득 차 있었다. 이 기간 도시 문화도 발전했으며, 아랍 문화가 다른 동양 문화와 혼합되었다. 『The Arabian Nights』가 설화로 등장한 것도 이 시기다. 구전으로 전해지던 이 이야기들은 하나의 작품으로 편찬되어 세계 여러 언어로 번역되었다. 이 책은 1898년에 출판된 영문 번역판이다.
