Thoreau는 1817년 매사추세츠 주 콩코드에서 태어나, 하버드 대학교에서 고전 언어와 문학을 공부했다. 1837년에 졸업한 후 그는 콩코드의 한 학교에서 잠시 교사 생활을 한 후, 1845년에 그는 Walden Pond에 작은 오두막을 짓고 그곳에서 2년 동안 살면서 1854년에 출판된 Walden을 저술했다.
