책소개

저자는 규장각한국학연구원의 책임연구원, 국립중앙도서관의 학예연구사로 재직하면서 우리나라의 지명 정리 작업을 20여 년간 해왔다. 그 과정에서 지난 100여 년 동안 우리말 땅이름이 수없이 사라져간 사실을 마주하며 마음 한 구석에 안타까움이 쌓여갔다. 그 안타까움을 담아 2016년에 서울·경기·인천의 수도권과 강원·충남, 울릉도·독도를 답사한 후 문헌 기록을 꼼꼼하게 비교 검토하여 초판을 보완하여 펴냈다. 독섬=石島=獨島를 자연스럽게 받아들이도록 만들고 싶다면 독도만의 문제로만 한정할 것이 아니라 전국의 문제로 바라봐야 한다. 그 많던 우리말 땅이름을 잃어버린 이유가 한자의 뜻과 소리를 빌려 우리말 땅이름을 표기했음에도 정작 읽을 때는 한자의 소리로만 읽는 우리의 오래된 습관 때문이라는 사실도 지적하고 있다. 우리말 땅이름을 지금이라도 찾아서 되살리려는 실천이 필요함을 역설한 책으로 영문판으로 번역하여 한국 지명에 대한 내용을 다른 나라에 소개하고자 한다.

저자(글) 이기봉
