1854년 철물점 주인이었던 아버지의 죽음 이후에 1865년 미국 테네시주로 이주하여 생계를 위하여 작가로 활동했다. 1868년 그녀는 여성잡지와 패션잡지에 자신의 글을 발표하기 시작했다. 그의 재능을 알아본 편집자에 의해 그의 글이 출판되면서 작가로 인정받았다.

Frances Hodgson Burnett (November 24, 1849 – October 29, 1924) was an American novelist born in Manchester, England, whose real name was Frances Eliza Burnett.
In 1854, after the death of her father, who was a hardware store owner, in 1865 she moved to Tennessee, USA, where she worked as a writer to earn her living. In 1868 she began publishing her own articles in her women's and fashion magazines. She was recognized as a writer when her writings were published by editors who recognized his talent.
Her major works include The Little Princess in 1886, The Little Princess in 1888, and The Secret Garden in 1909. His fairy tales have the advantage of being warm and full of emotion, but he was also embroiled in controversy for telling absurd stories, such as a boy living an ordinary life accidentally discovering that he is an aristocrat. In addition, there are 27 fairy tales, 17 novels, and 3 plays.

Her first account appeared in Godey's Lady's Book in 1868. Her main writing talent was combining romantic plots with realistic details of working-class life. Her first novel was published in 1877. Lass o' Lowrie's was the story of life in Lancashire. After she moved to Washington, D.C., Burnett wrote the novels Haworth's (1879), Louisiana (1880), A Fair Barbarian (1881), and Through One Administration (1883) and the play Esmeralda (1881) with William. Her later works include Sara Crewe, or What Happened at Miss Minchin's (1888). It was later republished as A Little Princess (1905). and A Lady of Quality (1896) - considered one of the best of her plays. The Lost Prince was published in 1915 and The Head of the House of Coombe was published in Canada in 1922. During World War I, Burnett put her own beliefs about what happens after her death into writing in her novel The White People (1917).
