Eden is a purple bear who lives on Bear Mountain. He wakes up early in the morning, excited for his Manhattan trip to find new kinds of honey. On his way into the city, he hears a voice: “Ouch! Ouch!” It’s Salmy, a fish with painful burns on her skin. She swam all the way from Alaska, because her ocean was getting too unbearably hot to live in. Surely there is somebody in Manhattan who can explain what is happening to her ocean!
Salmy jumps into Eden’s honeycomb and they journey together into the city. They run into Witness, a chirpy squirrel enjoying food he found in a trash can. He hears about Salmy’s woes and leads them to Dr. Owl of Strand Bookstore - the smartest statue in all of Manhattan. Will Dr. owl be able to help Salmy?

After the first of the environmental series, “The Honeybee that Can’t Smell: Star’s Trip to Jeju Island,” ArkStation is coming out with the second book: “Eden’s Goes to Manhattan.” The first book deals with ocean pollution, and the last friend to join the group is the one that opens up the second book. Artist Vincent S Ko illustrates fall in New York with lively colors and a lovely gouache style, as the story of bear Eden, salmon Salmy, and squirrel Witness unfolds. The three friends travel through symbolic parts of Manhattan such as Central Park, Strand Bookstore, Washington Square Park, as they learn about the cause and severity of climate change.
They are shocked to discover that greenhouse gasses caused by mounds of garbage and other factors are melting ice caps, leading to floods, heat waves, and other climate changes. Although they despair for a moment, they get up again with a newfound determination to do something in their own homes to bring about change.
Climate change is happening all around the world and cannot be ignored. Instead of pointing fingers at each other and condemning another’s choices, let us be inquisitive about what is happening in the world with this mindset: “I will choose to do what is right.” That is enough to change the world. Just like the three friends in this book, there are movements in the individual, group, national levels and that is a very hopeful outlook. So it is of utmost importance to let go of the thought “I’m just one person. I can’t change anything.” Instead, take the first step forward. Maybe we all need to hear Grandpa Emett’s words: “You see how deeply in trouble you are. You see that there must be change, and you mustn’t live like you’ve always lived. And that, my friends, is the hardest and most important step. Well done.”

저자(글) Vincent S Ko

Vincent studied drawing and printmaking at Pratt Institute in New York. After her studies, she taught art to teachers and students at a local elementary school in Tanzania, Africa. Today she continues her career as an artist in major cities, including Seoul, Paris, and London. Her passion for the environment naturally grew as she traveled and lived around the world. She wishes to share the beauty of the world through her picture books, with stories that remain in your heart long after you close the book.

저자(글) Miriam Ko

Miriam lives in Philadelphia, grew up in Israel, and was born in South Korea. She studied Childhood Education at New York University and today is a mom to a sweet, brave girl and a curious baby boy. She loves books and pictures and believes that nobody is too little to change the world. Everyone can have a big heart, just like Witness.
