Star is a honeybee who can’t smell and can only gather honey through watching her honeybee friends’ dancing signals. One day, Star mistakes the flies’ dance as the honeybees’ figure 8 dance and finds herself at a fish shop at the Jeju ‘Ohiljang’, a market that opens every five days, instead of the yellow flower fields. Star, who has lost her way, meets Ara, a blue-backed fish, and Ato, a trashcan suffering from garbage, and they sympathize with each other’s sadness. But, at the sea which they intend to return Ara, they encounter marine debris. Together with Da-Heen, a legendary white deer, and Eden, a purple bear from New York, the new friends clean up the plastic and can once again appreciate the beautiful sea of Jeju Island.

Environmental pollution is reducing the number of bees, species that hold an essential role in our ecosystem. This story was first imagined assuming that the honeybee’s inability to smell is a side effect caused by environmental pollution. However, Star the honeybee appears as an individual who bravely helps her neighbors despite her fatal weakness. Although the friends that Star makes all over Jeju Island are initially strangers, they come together as one as they face the problem of marine debris together. Rather than blaming each other, they respect each other’s existence and do their utmost best to solve the problem together.

The characters in the book remind us that environmental problems are important issues that we all have to solve together and that we have the will and wisdom to solve them. Although Star and her friends lived in different places and circumstances, they still worried and helped each other. The decisions we make for the future and our environments, like Star and her friends’ decisions, will eventually return to us as the best gift. If you travel to Jeju Island with Star, Ara, Ato, Da-Heen, and Eden, the beautiful sea, forest, and flower fields of Jeju Island will feel even more precious.

Vincent studied drawing and printmaking at Pratt Institute in New York. After graduating college, she taught art to teachers and children in Tanzania, Africa. Today she continues her career as an artist in major cities, including Seoul, Paris, and London. Her passion for the environment grew as she lived and traveled across the world. She wants to share the beauty of the world through her picture books, with stories that remain in your heart long after you close the book.

Miriam lives in Philadelphia, grew up in Israel, and was born in South Korea. She studied Childhood Education at New York University and today is a mom to a sweet little girl and a curious baby boy. She loves books and pictures and believes that everybody has the power to change the world - with one “Hello” at a time, just like Star.
