알렉상드르 뒤마는 1802년 7월 24일, 빌레르코트레라는 작은 마을에서 태어났다. 1806년 나폴레옹 군의 장군이었던 뒤마의 아버지가 죽자, 뒤마의 가족은 경제적 어려움을 겪게 된다. 어린 뒤마는 제대로 교육도 받지 못했지만, 『로빈슨 크루소』나 『아라비안 나이트』와 같은 작품을 읽으며 읽고 쓰는 능력을 길러나갔다. 성인이 된 뒤마는 생계를 꾸려나가기 위해 파리로 간다. 파리에서 그는 1823년 오를레앙 공작(후에 루이 필리프 왕) 가문에서 서류 작성하는 일을 얻게 되지만 곧 연극계로 뛰어들었다.1820년대 말에서 1830년대 초는 패기 넘치는 젊은 뒤마에게 작가로서의 장래를 보장해 준 매우 중요한 시기였다. 그는 1828년에 화려한 문체로 프랑스 문예 부흥을 묘사한 『앙리 3세와 그의 조정(Henri Ⅲ et sa cour)』을 완성하였다. 이 작품은 시간, 장소, 행동의 3일치라는 고전주의 규칙을 무시하고 운문이 아닌 산문으로 씌어진 전형적인 낭만주의 작품이었다. 1829년 이 작품의 공연은 첫날부터 대성황을 이루었다. 뒤마를 후원한 루이 필립은 매우 흡족해했으며 한때는 극단적인 왕당파였던 빅토르 위고도 격찬을 아끼지 않았다. 이렇게 작가로서의 뒤마의 출발은 성공적이었다. 이후 20여 년 동안 뒤마는 위고, 비니(Vigny)와 더불어 가장 인기 있는 극작가로 활약했다. 유명한 작품으로는 <삼총사>, <몬테 크리스토 백작>, <검은 튤립>, <음모자들> 등이 있다.
