19세기의 러시아 왕정인 제정러시아 시대에 네명의 형제들과 그들의 아버지인 호색적이고 잔인한 아버지 , 리 코브 , 사이에서 벌어지는 사건임. 맏형인 드미트리는 끊임없이 돈을 추구하고 아버지가 허용하지 않는 자기 몫의 상속몫을 요구함. 성자처럼 착한 동생 알렉세이는 형제를 모두 사랑하며, 냉정한 지식인 이반과 모사꾼 스메르디아코프는 경쟁적으로 아버지의 애정과 돈을 탐함. 드미트리는 아버지의 매혹적인 젊은 정부에게 애정을 느끼게 되면서 아버지를 질투하고 그녀의 관심을 끌기 위해 노력. 그러던 중 아래 형제가 아버지를 살해하고 맏형인 드미트리에게 죄를 덮운다는 이야기.

The Brothers Karamazov (Russian: Бра？тья Карама？зовы, Brat'ya Karamazovy, pronounced [？brat？j？ k？r？？maz？v？]), also translated as The Karamazov Brothers, is the final novel by Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky. Dostoevsky spent nearly two years writing The Brothers Karamazov, which was published as a serial in The Russian Messenger from January 1879 to November 1880. Dostoevsky died less than four months after its publication.
Set in 19th-century Russia, The Brothers Karamazov is a passionate philosophical novel that enters deeply into questions of God, free will, and morality. It is a theological drama dealing with problems of faith, doubt and reason in the context of a modernizing Russia, with a plot that revolves around the subject of patricide. Dostoevsky composed much of the novel in Staraya Russa, which inspired the main setting. Since its publication, it has been acclaimed as one of the supreme achievements in world literature.
