The types of diseases discussed in the earlier sections of this book are those commonly encountered in community urology clinics, whereas the topics from this point forward are primarily managed at university hospitals. The field of urology in Korean university hospitals is recognized globally for its excellence. According to Newsweek’s 2025 global ranking of urology departments, Seoul National University Hospital ranked 4th, Asan Medical Center 5th, and Samsung Medical Center 9th worldwide. University hospitals, in particular, demonstrate outstanding results in the surgical treatment of urologic cancers.

As a physician trained at the Department of Urology at Asan Medical Center—a center excelling in both clinical care and research—I take deep pride in this field. According to 2022 cancer incidence statistics from the National Cancer Information Center, among Korean men, prostate cancer ranks 2nd, kidney cancer 8th, and bladder cancer 10th. Notably, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan, and its incidence is steadily increasing in Korea as well.

Given Korea’s rapidly aging population, it is essential to create an environment where middle-aged and older patients can seek urologic consultation without hesitation when symptoms arise. As young urologists, our mission is to lead this change and ensure that patients can access care more comfortably.
