When Julia (she pronounced the name without the "a" at the end) was twenty-four, she inherited $22,000 from an obscure uncle in California. After deducting taxes and administrative expenses, the California State Court ordered the money transferred to her bank account. It came to $20,247.50.
She had been working in a local book store. "I haven't the vaguest idea why it came to me," she told the curious and covertly envious customers. "I guess he just didn't know anybody else."
She was a small, slender girl. Her eyes were bright and enthusiastic, her open smile so friendly that it was infectious.

Kris Ottman Neville (May 9, 1925 – December 23, 1980) was an American science fiction writer from California. He was born in St. Louis and his first science fiction work was published in 1949. His most famous work, the novella Bettyann, is considered a classic of science fiction.
Neville worked for many years as a technical writer specializing in plastics technology, and through his connection with the Epoxylite Corporation co-authored several texts on epoxy resins. He began publishing science fiction with "The Hand from the Stars" (July 1949 Super Science Stories), and for several years was a prolific contributor to The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction and other magazines.
Well-known science fiction writer and critic Barry N. Malzberg noted that "Kris Neville could have been among the ten most honored science fiction writers of his generation; instead, he virtually abandoned the field after conquering it early on and made himself the leading lay authority in the world on epoxy resins". Neville concluded early on that the perimeters of the field in the 1950s were simply too close to contain the kind of work he would have to do if he wanted to grow as a writer, and accordingly he quit.
Neville's best known story is probably "Bettyann" (1951) which, with its immediate sequel, "Overture" (1954), eventually comprised the novel Bettyann (1970). These tales combine a clearly-felt elegiac sense of how lives can best be lived, in terms familiar through the work of Ray Bradbury and Clifford D. Simak, along with a more radical and passionate sense of the primacy of love, in terms reminiscent of Theodore Sturgeon. The story features an alien lost in infancy on Earth who grows into a deep rapport with humans, though the arrival of her fellow beings from the stars to "rescue" her forces her to recognize her supernatural abilities.
