Maybe you’re a K-Pop or Korean drama enthusiast, eager to delve deeper into the country’s vibrant culture. Regardless of your motivations, I’m confident that reading this book will enrich your knowledge about Korea, ignite your passion to visit, and enhance your overall experience.
Believe it or not, this is the first book written by a bona fide, full-blooded Korean native, exclusively for you fine foreign readers. Now, I don’t mean to devalue those other guidebooks in English or other languages, but all of them were written by folks who barely scratched the surface of Korea on a quick visit. This book, though? It’s the real deal, straight from the source.
As a Korean native, who’s spent over five decades in Korea, I’ve acquired an exceptional understanding of the Korean language, culture, and history. From my school days all the way to graduate school, I’ve dove deep into a wide range of subjects, relished the diverse flavors of Korean cuisine, and explored numerous iconic landmarks across Korea. Yet, I’m fully aware that many Koreans have had similar experiences. So, what sets me apart as the author of this book, and what makes me the one behind this book? Allow me to share a few reasons that compelled me to undertake this endeavor.
One of the primary reasons is my background as a journalist. With over 20 years of experience in the healthcare media industry, my expertise lies in translating intricate medical concepts into easily understandable language for a broad audience. It’s worth noting that I am also a doctor, although my current focus does not involve direct patient care. Throughout my career, I have published numerous articles, columns, and books on healthcare-related topics. Additionally, I have even authored a novel set in a hospital, which was later adapted into a popular TV drama. Writing is truly my forte, and I am confident in my ability to effectively convey the essence of Korea to readers.
Next, I’m a seasoned traveler with a true knack for planning and preparing for trips. My previous book, The Art of Preparing for a Trip, a humorous and unique collection of travel essays unfortunately not yet available in English, is a testament to my passion for traveling and planning. Some of my friends have even playfully referred to me as the “Bill Bryson of South Korea,” so you could say that I’m a bit of a travel writer myself.
Furthermore, I have a profound passion for delectable cuisine and take great pleasure in exploring renowned restaurants and experimenting with various dishes in my own kitchen. While it may have been written some time ago, I also possess experience in writing about food and cooking. Undoubtedly, one of the most remarkable aspects of immersing oneself in Korea is the chance to savor its incredibly diverse and relatively undiscovered food culture. With that in mind, this book encompasses a multitude of captivating anecdotes and insights into the world of Korean cuisine.
Moreover, my globetrotting adventures have taken me to over 20 countries, and I even resided in the United States for a couple of years. Through these experiences, I’ve gained a unique perspective on how Korea stands apart from other nations and what aspects of Korean culture tend to captivate foreigners. I’ve discovered that outsiders often find fascination in things that locals may overlook or take for granted. Drawing from this understanding, I’ve crafted this book with a keen awareness of what foreign visitors find alluring about Korea. My goal is to provide readers with an informative and entertaining journey that showcases the intriguing aspects of Korean culture.
Last but certainly not least, the most crucial factor driving me to write this book is that no other Korean has ever embarked on a project quite like this. It’s a thrilling and fulfilling endeavor to undertake something that has never been done before and to create a singular work that hasn’t existed in the world until now, regardless of its perceived significance. This unwavering motivation has played a pivotal role in propelling me forward to pen this comprehensive book on Korea.
