This is a remark made in poor Korean by Hyung Jin Moon, who claims to be the “representative and heir” of the Unification Church , to curse his birth mother, Hak Jan Han. Hyung Jin Moon has been cursing his birth mother Hak Ja Han on YouTube every week. What is going on inside the Unification Church?

What is even more surprising is that the “True Mother” Hak Ja Han, wife of the founder, is denying the identity and religious authority of the “True Father,” the founder of the Unification Church. She has also been found to be attempting to modify the conventional Unification Church system of beliefs in order to add to it her own doctrine: relating to of the only begotten daughter. The rift within the Unification Church that has appeared just four years since the death of the founder was the result of an identity crisis within the Unification Church and the collapse of the “True Family,” the Unification Church’s model for world salvation; and the rift is expected to grow even larger for the time being.

This phenomenon in the Unification Church is very peculiar when compared to other new religious movementsn phenomena. In normal cases wherein the founder of a new religion who has maintained powerful charisma has suddenly passed away, the new religion rationalizes the charisma of the founder and maintains the charisma for a considerable time. This is because the identity and history of the new religion is virtually the same as that of the founder, and the collapse of the founder’s charisma together with the founder’s death could easily dismantle the foundations of the new religion. It is also because this way, confusion within the organization can be kept to a minimum, and it is easy to rationalize the failure of various prophecies, including the death of the founder. Even in such cases where it is quite clear that the founder’s prophecies have failed, cases wherein the charisma of the founder is weakened or dies away simultaneously with the passing of the founder are rare.

The present study began from the peculiar phenomenon in which, after the death of the Unification Church’s founder, the identity and charisma of the founder were rapidly destroyed. Prior to tracking down the division of the Unification Church and the changes to its identity, we will first identify the process by which the core identity of the Unification Church was formed, as well as the characteristics of said identity, followed by a historical examination of the tragic events that unfolded in the process by which the charisma of the founder was passed down, the alteration of church identity that followed the death of the founder, and the ensuing attempts to revive the founder’s charisma.
