The House by the Churchyard (1863) is a novel by Sheridan Le Fanu that combines elements of mystery and historical fiction.
The novel begins with the voice of an old man, Charles de Creseron, set in Chapellizord, Ireland, about 100 years after the events of the main story. It explains how the skull, buried in the churchyard from the beginning, was accidentally excavated. There are traces of two powerful blows to the head, and more surprisingly, there is a small hole.

Summary
At the center of the novel is the dark web of intrigue surrounding Surgeon Stoke (on the brink of bankruptcy) and Charles Nutter, a local agent of Lord Castlemallard whom Stoke hates but envy. Sturk is haunted by vague memories of Dangerfield and gradually realizes that it is actually the cunning and dangerous Charles Archer who committed Beauclerc's murder. (The only other person who knows the identity of Charles Archer is his original accomplice, the church clerk Mr. Irons.) Foolishly, Stuck tries to blackmail Dangerfield and is later found with a club through his head in Phoenix Park.

He was the foremost ghost story writer of his time, central to the development of the Victorian genre. M. R. James also called Le Fanu "absolutely first-rate as a ghost story writer".
Le Fanu has written in several genres, but is best known for his horror novels. He was meticulous and often used plots and ideas from his earlier books in his subsequent works. This can be seen in the fact that many of his novels are extensions and refinements of his earlier short stories. He focused on atmosphere and causal relationships rather than 'straight horror', and liked to leave important details unexplained and mysterious.
His three best-known works are the locked-room mystery Uncle Silas, the lesbian vampire novel Carmilla, and the historical novel The House by the Churchyard.
