본 도서는 대전과학예술비엔날레 2022 : 미래도시의 도록으로 해당 전시는 과학과 예술의 융복합을 선도하는 대전시립미술관에서 '미래도시'를 주제로 11개국 22작가의 작품을 선보인 전시다.

대전시립미술관은 과학예술의 글로벌 리더로서, 2019년 몰입형 예술, 2020년 인공지능과 예술, 2021년 정신의학과 예술에 이어, 2020년 ‘미래도시’를 기획하여, 초격차 과학예술로서 미래를 선도하고 있다.

The Daejeon Museum of Art proudly presents the Daejeon Art and Science Biennale 2022 : The Future of Cities. As a leading cultural institution in celebrating and promoting collaborations between science and art, the Daejeon Museum of Art explores the visions of future cities made possible by such interdisciplinary co-operations, following previous exhibitions on immersive visual experience 2019, AI-inspired art 2020, and psychiatry and art 2021.

The Exhibition runs for 90 days from 2 August to 30 October, featuring twenty-two artists from eleven countries. A selection of works will go on display at a total of five venues located in west and central Daejeon, including the Daejeon Museum of Art and the Daejeon Creative Center.

The Future of Cities is divided into four parts according to subthemes: ‘Terrapolis for All’, ‘Once Called Future’, ‘∞-dimensional intersection’, and ‘City Project’.

대전시립미술관은 대전과학예술비엔날레 2022 《미래도시》로 초격차의 과학예술로 꿈꾸는 미래도시를 선보인다. 대전시립미술관은 과학예술의 글로벌 리더로서, 몰입형 예술2019, 인공지능과 예술2020, 정신의학과 예술2021에 이어, 2020년 ‘미래도시’를 기획하여, 초격차 과학예술로서 미래를 선도하고 있다.

미래도시는 초격차의 과학예술로 ‘더 나은 미래A Better Future’의 ‘모두를 위한 문화’라는 꿈을 예술로 실현하는 것이다. 코로나 팬데믹 이후 미래도시는 초격차의 과학기술로 일류경제를 실현하고, 자연과 인류문명이 상생하는 새로운 역사가 될 것이다. 인류에 공감하고 상호작용과 발전에 기여하면서, 과학기술로 문화예술을 만개시키고, 문화예술이 과학기술에 선한 영향력을 미치는 새로운 도전에 함께 해주시기 바란다.

대전과학예술비엔날레는 미술관 큐레이터팀이 직접 기획하여, 명실상부 과학예술의 중심도시로서 역량을 선보인다. 대전과학예술비엔날레를 기획한 큐레이터팀은 미래도시를 다채롭게 상상하면서, “디지털 환상곡/선승혜", “수천 개의 미래도시들/빈안나”, “인간과 환경 그리고 생명에 관한 사유들/장현경”, “비디오 게임 속 램프는 진짜 전기를 소비한다/박하은”으로 제시했다.

국제적인 과학예술 비엔날레인 만큼, KAIST와 적극적인 협업을 통해 학술교류는 물론 도시와 예술을 바라보는 심화된 관점을 도출한다. KAIST 교수진이 이번 전시 도록 필진으로 참여하여 미래도시를 선도할 과학기술의 이해를 도모했다. “도시의 미래는 스마트 증강도시?/우운택 KAIST 문화기술대학원 교수", “상상하다: ‘디지털 주소’가 빚어낼 미래/김대영 KAIST 전산학부 교수", “스마트하고 회복탄력적이며 지속가능한 미래도시 만들기/김영철 KAIST 건설 및 환경공학과 부교수, KAIST 스마트시티연구센터 센터장"를 주제로 미래의 도시 상을 제시한다.

대전과학예술비엔날레 2022 《미래도시》는 ‘모두를 향한 테라폴리스’, ‘한때 미래였던’, '∞무한 교차로’, ‘시티프로젝트’로 구성했다.

1부 ‘모두를 향한 테라폴리스’. 테라폴리스라는 미래도시의 열린 가능성을 예술로 상상하고 공유한다. 미국의 생물학자이자 문화비평가인 도나 해러웨이Donna J. Haraway가 『트러블과 함께하기』에서 제시한 n-차원의 틈새공간인 테라폴리스에서 영감을 받았다. 인간은 지구에 사는 수많은 플레이어의 하나로서, 인간과 비인간이 모두 동등한 권리를 지닌 테라폴리스의 시민이 되는 미래도시를 예술로 선보인다.

2부 ‘한때 미래였던’. 이재이의 '한때 미래였던'이라는 작품 제목처럼 사람은 언제나 현재에서 미래를 꿈꾼다. 우리가 지금 여기 마주한 도시의 문제들에서 미래도시를 향한 예술적 상상을 살펴본다. 각각의 시각 언어로 기후변화, 생태위기 등 도시가 마주한 문제와 균열을 고민하고 새로운 방향을 모색한다.

3부 ‘∞무한 교차로’. 초격차의 디지털 기술이 비약적으로 발달하면서, 가상현실, 환상현실, 인공현실 등 무한의 현실들이 중첩되는 새로운 형태의 도시가 급속도로 진전한다. 급변하는 디지털 시대에 공생해야 할 새로운 삶의 방식을 예술로 고민한다.

4부 ‘시티프로젝트’. 《미래도시》의 또 다른 키워드는‘지역’이다. 대전의 가치와 의미를 확장하는 것은 물론 지역을 중심으로 상생하고 성장하는 미래도시의 예술을 꿈꾼다. 2021년 공모를 통해 6명의 작가/팀을 선발하여 도시 곳곳에서 ‘시티프로젝트’를 선보인다.

미래도시를 다함께 꿈꾸기 위해, 대전과학예술비엔날레 2022는 전시와 함께, 국제 학술행사, 과학예술포럼, 관장초청대담, 다채로운 어린이 및 가족 참여프로그램 등 시민들을 위한 공연과 행사를 준비했다.

The Daejeon Museum of Art proudly presents the Daejeon Art and Science Biennale 2022 : The Future of Cities. As a leading cultural institution in celebrating and promoting collaborations between science and art, the Daejeon Museum of Art explores the visions of future cities made possible by such interdisciplinary co-operations, following previous exhibitions on immersive visual experience 2019, AI-inspired art 2020, and psychiatry and art 2021.

The Exhibition runs for 90 days from 2 August to 30 October, featuring twenty-two artists from eleven countries. A selection of works will go on display at a total of five venues located in west and central Daejeon, including the Daejeon Museum of Art and the Daejeon Creative Center.

The Future of Cities realises the dream of ‘culture for all’ and ‘a better future’ through art combined with breakthrough scientific and technological inventions. In a post-pandemic era, cities across the world are being reshaped through leading-edge technologies and will become starting places where humanity-led history turns to a history of the planet, in which nature and civilization co-evolve. In this presentation, we intend to show future cities as places where art and culture have a positive impact on science and technology, and in turn science and technology help art and culture come into full bloom, while contributing to the cultivation of empathy and interaction among all living species on the planet.

The Daejeon Museum of Art’s Curatorial Team has been responsible for organising this Exhibition, from the planning phase such as the development of main ideas and the choice of the central theme. Our conceptions of future cities are diversely developed and suggested in the critical essays: “Digital Fantasia” by SUN Seunghye, “Thousands of Future Cities” by BINN Anna, “Thoughts on Humans, Environments, and Life” by Hyunkyung Jang, and “Lamps in Video Games Use Real Electricity” by PARK Haeun.

Befitting an international showcase for science-art collaborations, we’ve also closely worked with KAIST to deepen our perspective on cities and art. Several KAIST professors contributed to the exhibition catalogue to help our understanding of state-of-the-art technologies that will shape the future: “Are Augmented Smart Cities the Future of Cities?” by Woontack Woo, Professor of Graduate School of Culture Technology, “Imagine: Cities of Tomorrow Reconfigured by Digital Addresses” by Daeyoung Kim/ Professor of KAIST School of Computing / Chair of the Address Intelligence Expert Forum, and “Making Smart, Resilient, and Sustainable Cities” by KIM Youngchul / Associate Professor of Urban Design, KAIST Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering / Director, KAIST Smart City Research Center/ Director, KAIST Urban Design Lab.

The Future of Cities is divided into four parts according to subthemes: ‘Terrapolis for All’, ‘Once Called Future’, ‘∞-dimensional intersection’, and ‘City Project’.

Terrapolis for All: A look at the artists’ imaginative explorations of open possibilities for future cities. This section takes inspiration from the n-dimensional niche space called terrapolis, a habitation of critters, suggested by the American biologist and literature critic Donna J. Haraway in her book, Staying with the Trouble. In terrapolis, humans are just one species among numerous others. Displayed works imply that all humans and nonhumans are citizens of terrapolis with equal rights to act in shaping the world.

Once Called Future: Taking its title from a work by Jaye Rhee, Once Called Future suggests that futures have always been imagined from the perspective of the present. This section follows various challenges facing contemporary cities alongside hopes for the future. Featured artists use their own visual languages to address pressing issues in our cities such as climate change, ecological crises, and a polarised economy.

∞-dimensional intersection: As digital technology rapidly advances, urban spaces are infinitely overlaid with computer-generated experiences such as virtual reality, fantasy reality, and augmented reality. With the works presented, this section invites the audience to consider new forms of life in this radically new digital environment.

City Project: ‘Regional’ should be one of the keywords when talking about future cities. Six artists/team chosen from applicants for an open call that the Daejeon Museum of Art organised in 2021 revisit Daejeon’s old neighbourhoods in search of new values. Their artistic journeys of the city contribute to our hope for future cities sustaining local characteristics and values.

In order to extend and fully share our imagination about the future of cities with our citizens, we’ve arranged for a number of related events, including an international seminar, a science-art forum, the Museum Director’s dialogue with professionals, fun-filled programmes for children and family, and music performances.

2022 대전과학예술비엔날레 미래도시를 개최하게 되어 뜻깊습니다. 예술로 표현하는 미래도시는 대전시립미술관이 2019년 몰입, 2020년 인공지능, 2021년 정신의학과 같이 과학기술을 예술과 연결하는 새로운 문화를 개척하려는 도전입니다.

미래도시는 모두가 상생하는 미래도시를 제안합니다. 미래도시는 꿈의 성취입니다. 문화예술은 사람이 피운 꽃입니다. 자유로운 상상력으로 과학기술과 문화예술의 두 날개를 펼쳐 “더 나은 미래A Better Future”를 지향하는 “모두를 위한 문화Culture for All”라는 꿈을 함께 실현하고자 합니다.

미래도시는 “디지털환상곡Digital Fantasia”으로 문화예술이 과학기술에 선한 영향력을 미치고, 과학기술로 문화예술을 만개시키고자 합니다. 모두 함께 과학기술과 문화예술을 연결하여 인류에 공감하고 상호작용과 발전에 기여하면서 자연과 인류문명이 어우러진 테라폴리스의 새로운 역사를 함께 써주시기 바랍니다.

미래는 꿈을 이루는 시간입니다. 아직 오지 않았기 때문에, 영원히 알 수 없는 시간이지만, 역설적으로 오지 않았기 때문에 무엇이든 상상할 수 있는 무한의 시간입니다. 미래는 무엇인가라는 추상적인 질문을 바꾸어, 미래를 어떻게 만들까라는 구체적인 이야기를 예술로 보여주고 말하려고 합니다. 세상의 미래와 나의 미래가 일치되지 않는 간극은 잃어버린 꿈입니다. 꿈을 꾸지 않은 적이 없었지만, 꿈을 바꾸어 보지 못한 나를 발견합니다. 이제 나의 꿈을, 소원성취를 현실로 바꾸어 내야할 때입니다.

도시는 인류 욕망을 응집한 꿈의 실현체입니다. 21세기의 새로운 도시는 디지털과 비디지털이 교차하는 환상현실fantasy reality의 도시입니다. 도시는 문화의 상징이며, 문명은 도시로 응집되었습니다. 도시는 인간이 만든 최고의 발명품으로 바빌론, 아테네, 로마와 같은 고대도시부터 20세기의 뉴욕, 런던, 파리, 도쿄, 서울까지 현대사회의 정치, 경제, 문화에서 꿈의 상징이 되었습니다. 이제는 새로운 나의 도시를 꿈꾸는 자가 미래도시의 주역이 될 것입니다.

예술가들이 표현한 미래도시에 눈길을 주고, 귀를 기울여 봅시다. 예술가들의 섬세한 감성이 불편하게 느끼면서 미래를 불안하게 예견하는 내용에 더욱 관심을 기울여야 합니다. 예술가들의 미래에 대한 암울한 예측이 있다면, 우리는 그 갈등과 고통에 마음을 오롯이 기울여 더 나은 미래로 향하는 오체투지五體投地의 나아감을 마다하지 않아야 합니다.

나의 삶의 의미로 미래를 꿈꾸지 않는 자는 타인의 꿈에 휩싸여서 타인의 꿈을 살아갈 것입니다. 인간은 양도불가능하며 대체불가능한 자유가 있습니다. 바로 ‘나’의 미래를 살아가는 자유입니다. 21세기의 문화예술은 과학기술을 통해 디지털과 비디지털이 혼종하는 영토에서, 새로운 정치체제로서 테라폴리스에서 개인이 각자의 미래를 살아가는 자유의 표현이 될 것입니다.

우리 모두 용감하게 마음속에 품은 자유의 상Icon of Liberty이 미래의 꿈을 향한 횃불이 되어, 과학기술과 예술로 두 날개를 장착하고 모두를 위한 예술로 더 나은 미래를 향해 비상飛翔하기 바랍니다.

DREAMING OF FUTURE CITIES

I am happy to announce the opening of the Daejeon Art and Science Biennale 2022 : The Future of Cities. For years now, the Daejeon Museum of Art has worked to promote meaningful connections between art and various disciplines of science. To give some examples, our recent exhibitions, Ways of Seeing (2019), A.I. (2020), and Trauma (2021), explored immersive visual experience, AI-inspired art, and the relationship of art with psychiatry, respectively.

This year we present valuable insights into contemporary urban life offered by artists both at home and abroad, suggesting a possible city where every living species on the planet co-exists.

The future is an achievement that starts with a dream. Culture and art are the flowers that humans produce with day, month, or even year-long efforts. The Future of Cities represents our will to realise the dream of “culture for all” and “a better future” through unreserved artistry and inventions in art and science.

The Future of Cities is “Digital Fantasia” in which culture and art have a positive impact on science and technology, and in turn science and technology help culture and art come into full bloom. By connecting science and technology with culture and art, and contributing to the coevolution of the different realms accordingly, this exhibition aims to begin a new history with terrapolis mingling nature, humans, and technology.

The future is a time to make our dreams a reality. Given that the future is a time yet to come, it remains ambiguous and undetermined; yet it is this uncertainty that makes it a time when anything is possible. Rather than holding to the question, “What will the future be?”, we focus on the question, “How can we shape our future?”, by bringing together works that challenge present urban systems and that enlighten us to a new direction for future cities.

The future of the world may be different from the future we dream of, and the gap will contain many unfulfilled dreams. We may find ourselves disappointed, although we’ll never stop dreaming. But those dreams will remain possibilities ready to become realities through our will and determination.

Cities are the vessels of society capable of fulfilling the human dream of a better life, while twenty-first century cities are of fantasy reality where the real and virtual spaces constantly intersect. They are an emblem of civilization; and the civilizations are made manifest in their cities. From ancient capitals such as Babylon, Athene, and Rome to the 20th century’s metropolises such as New York, London, Paris, Tokyo, and Seoul, cities are the most remarkable human creations and the centres of contemporary politics, economy, and culture. Those who are dreaming of their own cities will produce new initiatives for future cities.

See how artists imagine future cities and listen to what they try to speak about our time. Pay more attention to the artists who envision the future in grim terms. Artists are of fine sensibilities that can sense the unsurfaced cracks of the world. If there are bleak pictures of the future, we should attend to the conflicts and pains the artists express and ascertain our way towards a better future even if it requires us to give up the benefits we’ve enjoyed.

Without a dream in your mind, you’ll live out other people’s dreams. All of us have an inalienable and incontrovertible right: the right to live our own future. The culture and art of the 21st century will be the expression of the right to live one’s own future in terrapolis, a new political construct and territory within which the real and virtual worlds are hybridised by scientific technology.

I believe that every one of us has an Icon of Liberty in our minds. I hope that our individual Icons of Liberty will turn into flames of inspiration and guide us towards our future on the wings of art and science.
