P?blius Ovidius N?s? (20 March 43 BC ? 17/18 AD), known in English as Ovid (/??v?d/ OV-id), was a Roman poet named Augustus. He was a contemporary of the older Virgil and Horace, and is often regarded with them as one of the three canonical poets of Latin literature. The Imperial Scholar Quintillian considered him the last of the Latin Elegies of Love. Ovid enjoyed great popularity during his lifetime, but Emperor Augustus exiled him to a remote province on the Black Sea, where he remained for ten years until his death. He was a contemporary of Virgil and Horace. He is best known for his Metamorphoses, a series of mythological tales in 15 books written in epic rhyme, and for his elegiac two lines, particularly Amores ("Love") and Ars Amatoria ("The Art of Love").
