르네상스기期 프랑스의 의사 ·철학자 ·점성가. 본명은 미셸 드 노스트르담Michel De Nostredame.
프랑스의 유대계系 집안에서 태어났다. 어릴 때부터 헤브라이어 ·그리스어 ·라틴어 ·수학 ·점성술을 배웠고, 몽펠리에대학에서는 의학을 전공했다.
그가 처음으로 유명해진 것은 1546~1547년에 엑상 프로방스와 리용에서 페스트가 발생했을 때 환자들을 치료해 준 일 들 때문이었으며, 본격적인 예언을 하기 시작한 것은 그 후의 일이었다.
그의 첫 번째 책은 일기예보를 모은 역서로서 1550년에 출간되었으며, 1555년에는 그의 예언집이 제세기諸世紀라는 제목으로 출판되었다. 이 책은 4행시 1천1백여편으로 프랑스어·스페인어·라틴어·히브리어 등이 뒤섞인 암호 같은 문장과 난해한 내용으로 이뤄져 있다.
그의 저서는 그 신비성 때문에 로마 가톨릭교회에 의해 금서禁書가 되었는데, 그 중에서도 제세기는 자신의 죽음뿐만 아니라 후원자인 앙리 2세의 죽음, 생바르텔미의 학살, 프랑스혁명, 나폴레옹의 등장까지 예언하였다.
노스트라다무스는 그의 예언을 운문형태로 썼는데 대부분은 매우 상징적인 문체로 되어있다. 게다가 그는 예언을 어떤 특정한 순서에 따라 배열하지 않았기 때문에 그 해석을 추측에 의존해야 하는 경우가 많았다.
특히 현존하는 예언시 968편이 1970년대 후반에 번역되어 나오면서, 그의 예언시 가운데 1999년 7월 하늘에서 공포의 대왕이 내려온다는 예언으로 인하여 세계 각국은 물론 한국에서도 이른바 종말론 붐이 일기도 했다.

Before thou goest on further to the perusing of this Work, thou art humbly intreated by the Authour, to forgive him his Anglicisme; for being born a Forreigner, and having had no body to help him to the polishing of it, for several reasons, it cannot be expected he should please thine Ears, so much as he may perhaps do thy Fancy. Every Exotick Plant can hardly become Domestical under one or two Generations: Besides that, the Crabbedness of the Original in his own Idiome, can scarce admit a Polite Eloquency in another. The very Antient English Language in this refined Age, is become both obsolete and unintelligible, as we may see in Chaucer, Gower, and others. If you adde to this, that the Authours Nation hath been alwayes famous for its Civility to those that were Strangers to their Language, as not onely to abstain from laughing at them when they spoke amiss, but also in redressing them charitably to the best of their power. I may probably expect you will measure me with the same measure, as you would be if you were in my case.
As for the Errataes of the Press, I could not help them, being out of Town most part of the time that the Book was a Printing; when you meet with any, I hope your Charitable Pen will either mend or obliterate them, and not lay another mans fault upon me, who neither for pride nor ostentation undertook this laborious Work, but that I might give some Satisfaction and Recreation to the Learned and Curious, who have had a longing for it ever since its Birth.

Further material was gleaned from the De honesta disciplina of 1504 by Petrus Crinitus, which included extracts from Michael Psellos's De daemonibus , and the De Mysteriis Aegyptiorum.

Michel de Nostredame (December 1503 – July 1566), usually Latinised as Nostradamus, was a French astrologer, physician and reputed seer, who is best known for his book Les Prophéties (published in 1555), a collection of 942 poetic quatrains allegedly predicting future events.

Nostradamus's father's family had originally been Jewish, but had converted to Catholic Christianity a generation before Nostradamus was born. He studied at the University of Avignon, but was forced to leave after just over a year when the university closed due to an outbreak of the plague. He worked as an apothecary for several years before entering the University of Montpellier, hoping to earn a doctorate, but was almost immediately expelled after his work as an apothecary (a manual trade forbidden by university statutes) was discovered. He first married in 1531, but his wife and two children died in 1534 during another plague outbreak.
