책소개

The objective of the Council for Asian Musicology shall be the advancement of research and study in the field of Asian music, for which purpose, all interested persons, regardless of race, creed, color, or national origin, are encouraged to become members. Its aims include serving the membership and council at large through the dissemination of knowledge concerning the music of the world’s peoples.

Asian Musicology is a refereed journal published once a year (May 1) by the Council for Asian Musicology. The journal publishes original articles in the field of Asian music, broadly defined. Translations of previously published articles are generally not considered.

PREFACE

I was at Vivakanda Park, Calcutta, India in September 1985 and it was packed with crowds. There I witnessed people were listening to performances all night at the temporary concert hall. The music was not fashionable western popular music performed by well-known musicians, but it was their traditional music ？ classical ragas. The audience listened to it seriously. I realized that the understanding of their music could have led them to listen to it all night. I wondered that what kind of power had their music that captured the people’s minds! Then I questioned that why Korean traditional music had not got such power.
It is said that pansori Pyeongchang (literally means ‘renowned vocalist(s)’, or master vocalists) in the past had a majestic power that grasped audiences. The audience’s enthusiastic attitude was legendary: it is said that some audiences brought their chamber pots with them in order not to miss any of the scenes of the singer’s performance that lasted several houses.
My first encounter with the power and beauty of music came accidentally from the melody out of from the radio program in the 1960s. The sound was slow and peculiar that each tone sounded with extreme care and elaboration. From the announcer’s comment, I realized that the music was the Gayago (or Gayageum) Sanjo performed by Seong Geum-ryeon (1923-1986). Since then any performances for the Gayago Sanjo music were not as attractive or touched as I had heard it for the first time. It was really great music when I heard it without any knowledge. It captured my ear and mind forever.

Chun In Pyong, Ph.D., Emeritus Professor of Music, composition, and history of Korean Music and Ex-Dean of the College of Korean Music, Chungang University and a Ph.D. in Korean music theory from Korean Studies. He has taught at the Seoul National University and Chungang University and his work has been funded by UNESCO, the Korean Arts Promotion Council, and the National research foundation of Korea. Dr. Chun has worked as an examiner of Intangible World Heritage of UNESCO. He is currently the president of the Council for Asian Musicology and Editor for Asian Musicology, president of the association for Korean Music Critics.He has authored many books, "The Guide for Composition for Korean Musical Instruments" (1988), "History of Korean Music"(2000), "Silk Road Music and Korean Music" (2001), "Asian Music Studies" (2002), "Silk Road and its' Music"(2003), “The Aesthetics of Indian Music” (2005).
