Stakeholder Interests and Power
Stakeholder groups exist in many forms, some well organized, other much less so. This variety makes it more difficult for a company’s managers to understand and respond to stakeholder concerns. Each stakeholder has a unique connection with the organization, and managers must understand these involvements and respond accordingly. For example, stockholders have an ownership interest in the organization. The economic health and success of the corporation affect these people financially; their personal wealth is at stake.
Customers, suppliers, and retailers have different interests. Owners are most interested in realizing a return on their investment, whereas customers and suppliers are most interested in gaining fair value in the exchange of goods and money. Neither has a great interest in the other’s stake. And when we recognize that there are different kinds of owners, ranging from pension funds with large holdings, to individual owners with small holdings, the picture grows more complicated.
Governments, public interest groups, and local communities have another sort of relationship with the company. In general, their stake is broader than the financial stake of owners or persons who buy products and sell services to the company. They may wish to protect the environment, assure human rights, or advance other broad social interests. Managers need to track these stakeholder interests with great care.
Different stakeholders also have different types and degrees of power. Stakeholder power, in this instance, means the ability to use resources to make an event happen or to secure a desired outcome. Most experts recognize three types of stakeholder power; voting power, economic power, and political power.
Voting power (not referring to political, electoral voting) means that the stakeholder has the legitimate right to cast a vote. For example, each stockholder has a voting power proportionate to the percentage of the company’s stock he or she owns. Stockholders typically have an opportunity to vote on such major decisions as mergers, acquisitions, and other extraordinary issues. Through the exercise of informed, intelligent voting, they may influence company policy so that their investment is protected and produces a healthy return.
Customers, suppliers, and retailers have economic power with the company. Suppliers can withhold supplies or refuse to fill orders if a company fails to meet its contractual responsibilities. Customers may refuse to buy a company’s products if the company enacts an improper policy. Customers can boycott products if they believe the goods are too expensive, poorly made, unsafe, or inappropriate for consumption.
Government exercises political power through legislation, regulations, or lawsuits. Other stakeholders also exercise political power, using their resources to pressure government to adopt new laws or regulations or to take legal action against a company.
