COVID-19 발생 전·후 제주지역 호텔기업 경영성과 영향요인 변화에 관한 연구

국문 초록

COVID-19와 같은 전 세계적인 팬데믹은 기업의 경영 환경을 불안정하게 하므로 경영자 및 주주에게 심각한 우려가 된다. 이러한 위험은 기후 위기 등 다른 형태의 글로벌 재난으로 발현할 수 있다. 따라서 관광업계를 포함한 경영인은 가장 기본적인 내부 요소를 강화하는데 더 집중해야 한다. 본 연구는 최근 경기 침체를 대표하는 COVID-19 전후를 대상으로 제주지역 호텔산업에서 경영성과에 영향을 미치는 근본적인 성과 요인의 변화를 분석하고자 한다. 분석을 위해 감사보고서가 제출된 제주지역 호텔 기업의 2018~2022년의 재무자료의 주요 재무비율을 이용하여 COVID-19 전후의 재무지표의 차이를 실증한다. 연구결과 COVID-19 이전과 이후에 제주지역 호텔 기업의 매출액순이익률과 총자산회전율에서 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 있고, 자기자본순이익률과 부채비율은 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 없는 것으로 나타났다. 이를 통해 COVID-19가 매출액순이익률과 총자산회전율에 영향을 미쳤음을 알 수 있다. 추가적으로 COVID-19와 같은 급작스러운 경영환경 악화 상황에서는 매출액순이익률이 자기자본순이익률로 대표되는 경영성과와 관련성이 높음을 실증하였다. 이러한 분석결과는 정상적인 경제 환경을 나타내는 COVID-19 이전 기간과 경기 침체를 나타내는 COVID-19 이후 기간에 제주지역 호텔 기업의 경영성과에 유의한 영향을 미치는 기본적 요인이 매출액순이익률이라는 실증적 증거를 제공한다. 따라서 COVID-19 대유행의 경험을 바탕으로 호텔 기업의 경영자가 수익성을 증가시켜 경영성과를 극대화하는 데 더 집중해야 함을 시사한다.

영문 초록

Global pandemics such as COVID-19 destabilize the business environment, causing serious concerns for managers and shareholders. Such risks may manifest in other forms of global disasters, like the climate crisis. Therefore, business leaders, including those in the tourism industry, should focus more on strengthening the most fundamental internal factors. This study aims to analyze the changes in fundamental performance factors affecting business performance in the hotel industry of Jeju Island before and after COVID-19, representing the recent economic downturn. For analysis, we empirically demonstrate the differences in financial indicators before and after COVID-19 using key financial ratios from the financial data of Jeju Island hotel companies that submitted audit reports from 2018 to 2022. The research results show statistically significant differences in net profit margin and total asset turnover of Jeju Island hotel companies before and after COVID-19, while return on equity and debt ratio show no statistically significant differences. This indicates that COVID-19 affected net profit margin and total asset turnover. Additionally, we empirically proved that in sudden business environment deterioration situations like COVID-19, net profit margin has a high relevance to business performance represented by return on equity. These analysis results provide empirical evidence that net profit margin is a fundamental factor significantly affecting the business performance of Jeju Island hotel companies in both the pre-COVID-19 period, representing a normal economic environment, and the post-COVID-19 period, indicating an economic downturn. Therefore, based on the experience of the COVID-19 pandemic, it suggests that hotel company managers should focus more on increasing profitability to maximize business performance.
