국문 초록

Purpose: This study empirically analyzes the impact of innovation activities on corporate efficiency in domestic mid-sized automobile parts companies. Technical efficiency and scale efficiency were measured using Data Envelopment Analysis(DEA), and Tobit regression analysis was employed to identify the effects of innovation activities on efficiency. Based on the findings, policy implications are proposed to strengthen firms’ innovation capabilities and promote efficient resource allocation. . Research design, data, and methodology: The analysis was conducted on 187 mid-sized automobile parts manufacturing firms in Korea as of 2021. Efficiency was measured using the DEA-SBM(Slack-Based Measure) model, where assets, debt, and number of employees were set as input variables, and sales and operating profit were used as output variables. Additionally, the CCR and BCC models were applied to compare and analyze technical efficiency(TE), pure technical efficiency(PTE), and scale efficiency(SE). A Tobit regression model was then used to examine the determinants of efficiency based on the DEA results, incorporating research personnel, R&D investment, and intellectual property rights as indicators of innovation activities. Results: The results show that the average technical efficiency(TE) was 0.955 and the pure technical efficiency(PTE) was 0.964, indicating a generally high level of efficiency among the firms. However, certain companies exhibited inefficiencies in resource utilization, primarily due to suboptimal scale conditions. R&D expenses and intellectual property rights had a significant positive impact on efficiency once they surpassed a critical threshold, whereas research personnel did not show a direct association with efficiency. Furthermore, significant differences in efficiency were observed according to firms’ age and regional characteristics. Implications: The findings indicate that innovation activities contribute meaningfully to the improvement of operational efficiency only when they are integrated and accumulated beyond a certain level. This underscores the importance of intensive R&D investment and strategic resource allocation for mid-sized automobile parts companies. Moreover, by demonstrating that innovation activities enhance not only short-term financial performance but also long-term managerial efficiency, this study emphasizes the need for innovation strategies focused on qualitative efficiency improvement. The results provide practical insights that can serve as foundational data for formulating government and local policy measures supporting R&D investment and technological cooperation among mid-sized firms.
