국문 초록

이 연구는 다큐멘터리 <건국전쟁>이 전기영화 장르의 관습과 영웅화 서사 전략을 통해 역사적 인물인 이승만을 어떻게 형상화하는지 분석한다. 연구는 다큐멘터리 인터뷰 시학 범주와 영웅의 여정 12단계를 결합한 통합적 분석 프레임워크를 활용한다. 연구 결과, <건국전쟁>은 감독의 개입, 인터뷰 기법, 아카이브 자료의 전략적 활용을 통해 이승만을 ‘건국 영웅’으로 재구성하고 있다. 특히 이승만의 생애를 단순한 연대기적 나열이 아닌 '시련과 보상'이라는 구조적 맥락으로 재배치함으로써 역사적 인물에 대한 복합적 캐릭터를 형성한다. 이러한 서사 전략은 관객이 이승만을 '독재자'와 '건국 영웅'이라는 이분법적 시각을 넘어 다층적 관점에서 고찰할 수 있게 한다. 본 연구는 정치 지도자 다큐멘터리의 공적 기억 형성 잠재력을 조명하며, 영웅적 서사 적용 과정에서 발생할 수 있는 역사적 단순화와 불균형의 위험성을 통찰하여 역사적 인물에 대한 다층적 이해를 도모한다. 이를 통해 학술적 객관성과 사실적 엄밀성을 유지하면서도 효과적인 스토리텔링 방법론을 구현할 수 있는 이론적 기반을 제시한다.

영문 초록

This research analyzes how the documentary 'The birth of Korea' (2024) integrates biographical film genre characteristics in political leader documentaries. The study employs an analytical framework that combines documentary poetics with the 12-stage Hero's Journey narrative theory. The findings confirm that the director's subjective interventions, interviews, and strategic use of extensive archival footage function as key mechanisms in reconstructing the historical figure. Particularly, the research highlights how Rhee's life events are deliberately rearranged within a structure of 'trials and rewards' rather than simple chronological presentation, contributing to complex character development. This narrative strategy guides audiences to contemplate Rhee from multilayered perspectives beyond the dichotomous view of 'dictator' versus 'founding hero.'
