국문 초록

(Purpose) The increasing risk of regional extinction due to population decline can be directly linked to the reduction of local cultural infrastructure. This study was conducted to analyze the current status and value of independent bookstores as cultural infrastructure at risk of disappearing. (Design/methodology/approach) The study focuses on the role of independent bookstores as cultural infrastructure in the regions of Gangwon, Chungcheong, Yeongnam, and Honam, which are experiencing population decline. It assesses the impact of these bookstores on local communities and their value as cultural infrastructure. To analyze this impact, seven items were selected, and independent bookstores in these areas were analyzed using these criteria. (Findings) Based on the analysis, the study identified three roles of independent bookstores as cultural infrastructure. First, independent bookstores contribute to the creation of local communities by serving as places for local residents to gather and interact. Second, independent bookstores function as multi-purpose cultural spaces, fulfilling roles akin to public libraries, museums, cultural centers, and art galleries. Third, independent bookstores act as local archives, uncovering and preserving local symbolism and cultural identity. These three roles are valuable resources that can help increase the inflow of people into the region.
