영문 초록

This paper aims to illuminate the lesson from the restoration of the Seodaemoon Prison in Seoul and the Jeonnam Provincial Government Building in Gwangju by observing what and how critical damages happened to the buildings that have sad and heroic stories in the democratization process of the Korean history. The second chapter emphasizes that the prison should educate the democracy activists’ remains more besides those of the fighters for independence. The third chapter says that the Jeonnam Hall should be restored as much as possible after seeing how the central and the provincial governments deceive and fuel conflicts with the citizens of Gwangju. The conclusion is that the historic sites related to democratization has a strong regression to the original state by the victims. Therefore, the governmental forces should not damage the buildings by removing and transshaping them arbitrarily, which is to lead to overwhelming cost of restoration.
