국문 초록

  본 논문의 목적은 경남지역에서 일어난 기독교 평신도 중심, 특히 여성 중심의 신사참배 거부 공동체를 연구하여 그 역사적 실상을 파악하는 데 있다. 경남 남해군 내산의 성산 공동체, 하동군 북방리의 공동체, 산청군 중산리 지리산 공동체 등지의 연구에서 찾아볼 수 있는 것은, 첫째로 세 공동체 모두가 신사참배 거부 공동체였으며 기독교 평신도 중심이었다는 사실이다. 그리고 남해군 내산의 성산 공동체와 북방리 공동체의 경우 기독교 평신도 여성들의 활동이 두드러진 공동체였다는 사실이 주목할 만하다. 둘째로 이들은 지역상 은거하기에 적절한 지리산과 남해의 섬을 중심으로 하나의 벨트를 형성하고 있다는 사실이다. 셋째로 손양원 목사의 영향이 컸으며 간접적으로는 경남 출신인 주기철 목사의 영향도 있었음을 발견할 수 있다.

영문 초록

  From studies of Gyeongnam area communities in Namhae-gun Naesan, Hadong-gun Bukbang-li, and Mt. Jirisan at Sanchung-gun Jungsan-li, we find, firstly, all three communities were made up of anti-Shinto resistance groups and centered upon lay members of the church instead of church officials or leaders. We also note how female members of the church were active in communities in the Seongsan community of Namhae-gun Naesan and Bukbang-li. Kim So Gab-sook of Namhae-gun Naesan, Lee Anna and Chong In-sub of the Mt. Jirisan Community at Sanchung-gun Shichun-myun Jungsan-li were all female leaders as well as lay members of the church. We also find that most church participants were lay members.
  Second, these communities formed a geographical chain linking Mt. Jirisan and outlying islands. With Mt. Jirisan at the center, we find the Sanchung-gun Mt. Jirisan Community to the north, Okjong-myun Bukbang-li Community to the south, and the island Namhae-gun Seong-san Community further south. Mt. Jirisan and these islands were particularly excellent hiding locations.
  Third, we find these groups were strongly influenced by Rev. Son Yang-won. Son"s wife and children were part of the Naesan Community in Namhae Sam-dong, and the Okjong-myun Bukbang-li Community was led by Hwang Duk-soon, who was taught by Rev. Son. In particular, the Bukbang-li Community was the recipient of letters from Rev. Son during his imprisonment. The community was also indirectly affected by Rev. Ju Gichul, who was a native of the Gyeongnam area. Shin Jong-gyun, a leader of the Mt. Jirisan Community at Sanchung-gun Shichun-myun Jungsan-li, was strongly influenced by Rev. Ju"s faith.
  Finally, we note that comprehensive studies of anti-shinto resistance communities have been neglected in scholarship after 1945, greatly due to church schisms and disagreements between denominations. The Namhae Naesan community has been regarded as an important religi
